Into Every Life, a Little Rain Must Fall

We had a minor hiccup registering this morning, but thanks to the Ms. Leuver's guideline that to be early is to be on time, we were successfully entered into the rolls of the conference.

The opening ceremonies were quite entertaining. A traditional African dance troupe got us off our feet, praising our ancestors, and giving our love to the Earth. The SDLC co chairs gave a brilliant  welcome to both the students and the adults who brought them here. I hope to post the text of this speech later in the week and our attendees will use some of it as a writing prompt for their blog entries. Our keynote speaker was John Quinones from "Prime Time" and "What Would You Do?" and encouraged the students to never give up on their dreams and never stand by when others are pushed to give up on theirs. Please take some time to view a seven minute clip from his episode "Racism in America" on the right hand side of the blog.

This afternoon we will attend our "affinity groups" where students and teachers will meet with others who share the same ethnic identity and, in many cases, walk into a room where there are others who look just like them.

Stay tuned.
